ENGRMAE 159 Aircraft Design (Credit Units: 4) Preliminary design of subsonic general aviation and transport aircraft with emphasis on layout, aerodynamic design, propulsion, and performance. Estimation of total weight and weight distribution, design of wings, fuselage, and tail, selection and location of engines, prediction of overall performance. Prerequisite: MAE112, MAE136, MAE158. Aerospace Engineering and Mechaincal Engineering majors have first consideration for enrollment. (Design units: 4)

2. Apply mechanical and aerospace engineering technology to aircraft design

3. Analyze existing aircraft performance data.

4. Design an aircraft subject to specified constraints.

5. Develop computer-aided design & sizing tools

6. Understand some basic operation of the aircraft manufacturing industry and airplane industry, as well as some problems and ethical concern of both.

7. Write sizing and full design reports, with clear statements of design choices and justifications backed by analysis

Class Schedule:

Meets for 4 hours of lecture and 1 hour of discussion each week for 10 weeks.

Development of a computer-aided sizing code is required. Students may use Excel, Matlab, Fortran, or C.

Design Content Description
Approach:

This is the capstone design course for the aerospace major. The content is 100% design, but students are required to apply much of the engineering technology they have learned in the rest of the aerospace curriculum. The design experience in this course includes consideration of production, maintenance, economics, and human factors. Each student develops his/her complete airplane design. Weekly progress reports are required. The project requires approximately 70 hours of work outside class. Students present their final design orally and submit a written report.
