Course Learning Outcomes. Students will:

1. Understand what the different areas of civil engineering are, and know the important historical developments.

2. Recognize famous projects in civil engineering such as bridges, buildings, environmental projects, dams, water works, highways, and transportation systems.

3. Understand the importance of using analytical and mathematical thinking in successfully planning, designing and constructing civil engineering projects.

4. Think of the future possibilities in civil engineering practice and how new technologies could be applicable.

5. Understand the importance of societal, economic and institutional influences in civil engineering professional practice.

6. Understand the importance of ethical practices in the profession.

7. Understand the importance of proper spoken and written communication.

  • Introduction to Surveying and Distance Measurement
  • Cross Section Leveling, Angle Measurement and Profiling
  • Topography
  • Route Surveying
  • Cut and Fill Project
  • Construction Staking, Site Planning and United States Public Land System
  • Introduction to GIS, Map Projections and Coordinate Systems
  • GIS Data Acquisition, Attribute data, and geospatial data processing (week 7)
  • Spatial analysis using ArcGIS, Map Design and Map Layout
  • Georeferencing, Processing Aerial Photos and Lidar Data in GIS
  • Design Project
  • This course includes a 4-hour surveying demonstration for which participation is required.
Class Schedule:

Meets for 2 hours of lecture and 2 hours of laboratory each week for 10 weeks.

Computer Usage:

AutoCAD, Spreadsheet software (EXCEL); Basics GIS software (ArcGIS); Online reading materials and class notes (Web browsers and search engines)

Laboratory Projects:

Computer laboratory presents an introduction to the various fields within Civil Engineering. Laboratory projects are selected from topics such as GIS use in water resources, data collection from structural engineering laboratory, microsimulation of traffic networks, etc, subject to the interest expressed by students in class. Watching and discussing the videos of famous civil engineering projects is another laboratory work.
