Prerequisites by Topic

Basic computer skills. Basic physics and mathematics.

Lecture Topics:
  • Historical developments in Civil Engineering from old civilizations to present day. Areas, infrastructural elements and terminology. (1 Week)
  • Introduction to basic physical principles to visualize structural behavior. Examples of profession use of hand-sketching for communication. (1 week)
  • Introduction to structural elements (arch, shell, lateral resistance systems). Introduction to 3D objects, isometric drawing, orthographic projections. (1 week)
  • Introduction to Tall structures, Foundation systems and basic soil mechanics. 2-point and 3-point Perspective drawings, Bird's and Worm's eye views. (1 week)
  • Introduction to hydraulic systems and water resource management. Introduction to historical developments in the environmental movement. (1 week)
  • Introduction to environmental engineering. Rotational visualization of 3D objects. (1 week)
  • Introduction to engineering applications of mathematics in traffic/fluid modeling. Introduction to historical developments in transportation systems. (1 week)
  • Introduction to transportation planning and associated human elements. Introduction to simulation modeling of transportation/urban systems. (1 week)
  • Ethics and professional responsibility. Historical structural failures and Importance of Careful Detailing in Drawing. (1 week)
  • Construction Technology and Management. Introduction to Building Information Modeling (BIM) with AutoCAD. (1 week)
Class Schedule:

Meets for 2 hours of lecture and 3 hours of laboratory each week for 10 weeks.

Computer Usage:
  • Use of Google SketchUp for basic drawings and 3D visualization.
  • Use of AutoCAD software for basic 2- and 3-D designs.
  • Online learning of introductory material on civil engineering.
Laboratory Projects:
  • Drawing small 3D shapes with Projection Views.
  • Graphical Design of simple #D buildings/objects with aesthetic and functionality criteria.
  • Drawing a campus building with 3D and perspective visualization, by hand and Google SketchUp. *AutoCAD 2D design of traffic intersection layout

Contributes to the design experience and Engineering Topics courses of Civil Engineering and Environmental Engineering majors.

Aesthetic and preliminary functional design of building (cross-sections, elevations and plans) using 2-D CAD.
