ENGRCEE 181B Senior Design Practicum II (Credit Units: 2) Team designs land development project including infrastructural, environmental, circulation aspects. Focus on traffic impact studies, design of roads, geometry, signals, geotechnical and hydrological analysis, design of structural elements, economic analysis. Oral/Written interim and final design reports. Laboratory sessions. In-progress grading. Corequisite: ENGRCEE 130. Prerequisite: ENGRCEE1 81A. Civil and Environmental Engineering majors have first consideration for enrollment. ENGRCEE 181A-B-C must be taken in the same academic year . (Design units: 2)

Course Learning Outcomes. Students will:

1. Complete a preliminary design for a structural, transport, water, or environmental engineering project.

2. Apply ethical, societal, legal, and other constraints in engineering design.

3. Apply engineering cost estimation and project management techniques for engineering design projects.

3. Apply engineering cost estimation and project management techniques for engineering design projects.

4. Function as an active participant on multi-disciplinary teams, interacting with development, design, and construction professions.

6. Effectively present plans & designs to a technical audience.

Prerequisites by Topic

Engineering economics, project management, CAD, and fundamentals of infrastructure planning and design (structural, transportation, water resource, geotechnical, and environmental engineering design).

Lecture Topics:
  • The Design Process. (Week 1)
  • Preliminary Cost Estimates and Design Report Overview. (Weeks 2-3)
  • Survey, Geotechnical, and Street Design Elements. (Weeks 4-5)
  • Design of Water, Sewer, and Drainage Elements. (Weeks 6-7)
  • Design of structural elements. (Week 8)
  • Design Review Process and Contract Documents. (Week 9 & 10)
Class Schedule:

Meets for 1.5 hours of lecture, 1 hour of discussion and 1.5 hours of laboratory each week for 10 weeks.

Computer Usage:

AutoCAD, GIS, MS-Project, MS Word, Excel, and PowerPoint, and other software for planning, design, and economic analysis.

Laboratory Projects:

Weekly lab sessions have students meeting with either their consulting team (typically each consulting team incorporates five individual design projects as well as overall site development) and with members of other teams who are working on the same individual design project (and with the external client/consultant for each individual design project).

Professional Component

Contributes toward the Civil Engineering Topics courses and Major design experience; and the Environmental Engineering Topics courses and Major design experience.

Approach:

Comprehensive land development and design continues with analysis and design of team infrastructure projects (structural, transport, water, and environmental), considering all elements relating to individual project design and to the integrated final design of the project as a whole, including preliminary project design report and team presentation.
