ENGRCEE 160 Environmental Processes (Credit Units: 4) Introduction to environmental processes in air and water, mass balances and transport phenomena. Fundamentals of water quality engineering including water and wastewater treatment. Prerequisite: Chemistry 1B, CEE170. Civil Engineering and Environmental Engineering majors have first consideration for enrollment. (Design units: 1)

Course Learning Outcomes. Students will:

1. Expand understanding of basic math and chemistry concepts as they apply to water quality issues.

2. Understand the contemporary issues in water pollution.

3. Analyze batch, plug-flow, and CSTR reactor performances.

4. Design sedimentation, aeration, aerobic anaerobic, and disinfection treatment units.

5. Perform the preliminary design for wastewater and drinking water treatment plant with consideration of environmental impact and sustainability.

6. Learn to construct professional report on the engineering design outcome.

Prerequisites by Topic

General chemistry, fluid mechanics, probability and statistics.

Design Content Description

Weekly discussion sessions expand on some lecture topics. The sessions also provide reviews of basic concepts when the homework solutions indicate the need for such reviews. Provide an open-ended design experience closely modeled on a real preliminary design of a small industrial pre-treatment facility. Use the design experience to reinforce the concepts covered in earlier classes, as well as in this class. Introduce the concepts of system optimization.
