ENGRCEE 156 Foundation Design (Credit Units: 4) Applications of soil mechanics principles to the analysis and design of shallow foundations, retaining walls, pile foundations, and braced cuts. Design criteria: bearing capacity, working loads and tolerable settlements, structural integrity of the foundation element. Damage from construction operations. Prerequisite: CEE130, CEE151C. Civil Engineering majors have first consideration for enrollment. (Design units: 3)

Course Learning Outcomes. Students will:

1. Determine lateral earth pressures applied to foundations.

2. Calculate bearing capacity, subsurface stress distribution and settlement of shallow foundations. (EAC a)

3. Analyze and design shallow foundations by comparing capacity with load demands.

4. Calculate axial and lateral load capacity and settlement of single and group pile foundations.

5. Proportion and design single and group pile foundations by comparing with load demands.

6. Design retaining walls by considering axial, sliding, and overturning loads.

Lecture Topics:
  • Introduction and factors to consider in foundation design (Week 1)
  • Lateral earth pressure theory (Week 2)
  • Shallow foundations: bearing capacity, stress distribution, settlement (Week 3, 4, 5)
  • Mats and combined footings (Week 6)
  • Deep foundations: single piles and pile groups, axial and lateral capacity and settlement (Week 7, 8, 9)
  • Retaining wall design (Week 10)
Class Schedule:

Meets for 4 hours of lecture and 1 hour of discussion each week for 10 weeks.

Computer Usage:

No formal computer usage is prescribed in this course. However, students are required to use formal word processing and computer plotting tools in homeworks and projects (e.g. MS Word, Excel, etc.). In addition students are encouraged to use computer analysis tools in assignments (e.g. MATLAB, PCA design software, etc.).

Laboratory Projects:

No formal laboratory projects are assigned.

Contributes to the design experience and Engineering Topics courses of Civil Engineering major.

Design Content Description

Design is incorporated into this class by two methods. First, students design foundation components in weekly homework assignments, given desired soil parameters and known loading conditions (approximately 50% of homework assignments are design-based). Second, students work throughout the quarter on a real design project, where they learn the process of design. Students are asked to review collected soil data from a given site (lab test data and field report information), interpret this data, conduct a complete foundation design, and finally recommend a suitable design. An intermediate progress report and a final, detailed report with the design recommendations and methodology are prepared. Students work in teams on the design project. A subset of the lectures is designed to guide students as needed to complete design related homework problems and the design project. A field trip is organized during one lecture period to visit the site their design project is based upon.
