Course Learning Outcomes. Students will:

1. Recognize different structural systems and loads.

2. Develop shear and moment diagrams of statically determinate beams, beam assemblages, and frames.

3. Develop influence lines.

4. Apply moment/area and conjugate beam methods to analyze the deformation of beams, trusses, and frames.

5. Apple the force method to analyze statically indeterminate beams, frames, and trusses.

Prerequisites by Topic

Vector Mechanics, Newtonian Statics and Mechanics of Materials

Lecture Topics:
  • Week 1-2: Basic concepts of structural analysis Structural systems and loads
  • Week 3: Analysis of statically determinate trusses
  • Week 4-5: Analysis of statically determinate beams and frames
  • Week 6-7: Influence lines
  • Week 8-10: Deflection of beams (elastic beam theory)
Class Schedule:

Meets for 4 hours of lecture and 1 hour of discussion each week for 10 weeks.

Computer Usage:

Selected homework problems are solved using the computer software provided with the textbook.

Laboratory Projects:

Small-scale beam deflection tests.
