Course Learning Outcomes. Students will:

1. Evaluate and classify soils. (EAC a, EAC b)

2. Evaluate the state of stress in a soil mass. (EAC a, EAC b)

3. Calculate seepage volume through a soil mass. (EAC a, EAC b)

4. Estimate settlement magnitude of compressible soils. (EAC a, EAC b)

5. Evaluate lateral earth pressures on retaining walls. (EAC a, EAC b)

7. Prepare technical laboratory reports. (EAC g)

  • Stresses and strains, axial forces, shears, and bending moments
  • Mohr's circle
  • Viscosity, capillarity and surface tension, and hydrostatic forces on surfaces
  • Steady flow and Bernoulli's theorem
Lecture Topics:
  • Introduction to experimental soil mechanics (Week 1)
  • Determination of moisture content and specific gravity (Week 2)
  • Soil Classification: Sieve grain-size analysis; hydrometer grain-size analysis (Week 3)
  • Liquid, plastic, shrinkage limit test (Week 4)
  • Compaction Tests (Standard/Modified proctor compaction test & In-situ Sand Cone Tests) (Week 5)
  • Constant head permeability or falling head permeability test (Week 6)
  • Consolidation test (Week 7)
  • Shear Strength test (Week 8)
  • Unconfined compression test (Week 9)
Class Schedule:

Meets for 2 hours of laboratory each week for 10 weeks.
