#### ENGRCEE 130 Soil Mechanics

**ENGRCEE 130 Soil Mechanics (Credit Units: 4)** Mechanics of soils, composition and classification of soils, compaction, compressibility and consolidation, shear strength, seepage, bearing capacity, lateral earth pressure, retaining walls, piles. Prerequisite: CEE150; CEE170. Civil Engineering and Environmental Engineering majors have first consideration for enrollment. (Design units: 0)

1. Evaluate and classify soils. (EAC a, EAC c, EAC e, EAC k)

2. Calculate fundamental soil properties (EAC a, EAC c)

3. Evaluate the state of stress in a soil mass. (EAC a, EAC c, EAC e)

4. Calculate seepage volume through a soil mass. (EAC a, EAC e)

5. Estimate settlement magnitude of compressible soils. (EAC a, EAC e)

6. Evaluate lateral earth pressures on retaining walls. (EAC a, EAC c, EAC e)

7. Perform slope stability analysis. (EAC a, EAC c, EAC e)

- Stresses and strains, axial forces, shears, and bending moments
- Mohr's circle
- Viscosity, capillarity and surface tension, and hydrostatic forces on surfaces
- Steady flow and Bernoulli's theorem

- Introduction and weight-volume relationships (Week 1&2)
- Atterberg Limits and classification of soils (Week 2)
- Soil compaction (Week 3)
- Hydraulic Conductivity and Seepage (Week 4)
- Effective stress concept and stresses in a soil mass (Week 5)
- Settlement and consolidation of soils (Week 6 & 7)
- Shear strength of soils (Week 8)
- Lateral earth pressures (Week 9)
- Introduction to Slope stability (Week 10)

Meets for 3 hours of lecture and 1 hour of discussion each week for 10 weeks.
