Course Learning Outcomes. Students will:

1. Students will learn engineering and design principles.

2. Students will design simple mechanical system using CAD

3. Students will experience project-based and team-based learning

4. Students will present their projects in a competition

Prerequisites by Topic


Lecture Topics:
  • Week 1: Overview on engineering, Project overview on hovercraft and levitation, EHS Safety training, personal safety equipment, Training videos: Handtools, Fasteners, Team Formation
  • Week 2: Technology assessment, beam bending, CEE Overview, project organization and management, bending of beams
  • Week 3: Fluid mechanics, MAE overview, Measurement and layout, Cutting, grinding and filling
  • Week 4: Fluid Mechanics 2: Propulsion and fans, EECS overview, Fluid mechanics: fans, materials selections
  • Week 5: Basic electronics, ChEMS overview, Electrical fabrication, Training video: soldering, Tech report/memo demo
  • Week 6: Materials, Tension and shear, BME overview, Training video: Basic structures, solidworks drawing
  • Week 7: Vehicle mass properties, center of gravity, moments of inertia, Engineering ethics, CAD drawings, Budget and parts list
  • Week 8: Hovercraft dynamics
  • Week 9: Practical aspects of hovercraft control, start building the hovercraft, guest speaker: Product development
  • Week 10: Preliminary Design Review, Prelim Testing of Levitation and Forward Movement
Class Schedule:

Meets for 2 hours of lecture and 3 hours of laboratory each week for 10 weeks.
