EECS 170E Analog and Communications IC Design (Credit Units: 4) Advanced topics in design of analog and communications integrated circuits. Topics include: implementation of passive components in integrated circuits; overview of frequency response of amplifiers, bandwidth estimation techniques, high-frequency amplifier design; design of radio-frequency oscillators. Prerequisite: EECS170C. (Design units: 3)

Course Learning Outcomes. Students will:

1. Describe and understand the general challenges in the design of CMOS RF circuits.

2. Design matching circuits using passive RLC components.

3. Use various techniques to design high-frequency amplifiers.

4. Design and analyze oscillators.

5. Understand fundamentals of phase noise in oscillators.

6. Use the knowledge gained in this course to design RF integrated for communication transceivers.

Prerequisites by Topic
  • Understanding of engineering materials. operation, design, and utilization of integrated circuit modules, including operational amplifiers.
  • Integrated Electronic Circuit Design which covers transistor-level design simulation, and layout/extraction of analog and digital circuits.
Lecture Topics:

The course is aimed at providing a comprehensive overview on RF integrated circuits including high-frequency amplifiers, and radio- frequency oscillators.

Class Schedule:

Meets for 3 hours of lecture and 1 hour of discussion each week for 10 weeks.

Computer Usage:

HSPICE on UNIX or PSPICE on PC.

Design Content Description
Approach:

The class material involves both analysis and design of radio-frequency (RF) integrated circuits. The design component is emphasized through the selection of lecture material, homework and simulations of designed RF circuits. The lecture material is closely related to the homework assignments that are prepared with a circuit design perspective. Homework will contain problems related to the design and simulation of RF circuits.
