CBEMS 244 Detection and Measurement of Radiation (Credit Units: 4) Basic principles of detection and measurement of ionizing radiation - both theory and practical aspects of measurement techniques for alpha, beta, gamma and neutron radiation, Properties of different detector materials will be included as well as electronics and data treatments and analysis. Same as CHEM 244. Prerequisite: CHEM 233 or CBEMS 233. Graduate students only. (Design units: 0)

  • General principles of detectors
  • General principles of detection electronics: Pulse processing, shaping, timing, coincidence and anti coincidence
  • Gas detectors, statistics
  • Scintillation methods, solids, liquids. MCAs, photomultipliers and CCDs
  • Semi-conductor detectors – alpha, beta, gamma spectrometry
  • Neutron detection, NAA
  • Low temperature detectors, photographic, ICs as radiation detectors
  • Background sources, shielding and reduction methods
Class Schedule:

Meets for 3 hours of lecture and 4 hours of laboratory each week for 10 weeks.
