CBEMS 189A Senior Design Project (Credit Units: 1) Group supervised senior design projects that deal with materials selection in engineering design and that involve case studies in ethics, safety, design, failure modes, new products, and patents. Activities conclude with a presentation of the projects. In-progress grading. CBEMS 189A-B-C must be taken in the same academic year and requires consent of instructor. This course will ne restricted to students in Materials Science Engineering. (Design units: 1)

Design Content Description

This 5-design credit course is the highlight of the design experience for our students. The goals of this course are the application of materials science engineering science fundamentals, advances, and analysis in design projects. These projects deal with materials selection in engineering design that involve case studies in ethics, safety, design, failure modes, new products, and new patents. Constraints dealing with reliability and economics are all discussed. Teams of students will be encouraged to propose their own ideas regarding design projects to the faculty Committee coordinating the course. The lecture part of the design course will be organized as interactive seminars, addressing a variety of topics from environmental and safety and safety aspects of design to professionalism, ethics, and report writing. Qualified materials scientists and engineers involved in designs and selections of materials in the local industry will be invited to give seminars that highlight designs related issues.

Grading Criteria:

50% of the grade is determined by student involvement in the senior project as determined by faculty or advisor. 50% of the grade is determined by performance on specific assignments associated with lecture and text material.
