CBEMS 140B Chemical Engineering Laboratory II (Credit Units: 4) Continuation of the CBEMS 140A covering mass transfer operations such as distillation, absorption, extraction, etc. Rate and equilibria studies in simple chemical systems with and without reaction. Study of chemical process. Prerequisite: CBEMS130; CBEMS135; CBEMS140A. Chemical Engineering majors have first consideration for enrollment. . (Design units: 3)

Course Learning Outcomes. Students will:

1. Plan and conduct lab experiments to solve Chemical Engineering problems.

2. Conduct laboratory experiments safely.

3. Learn how to operate, manipulate, and calibrate engineering machinery and measurement devices.

4. Collect and analyze experimental data using statistical principles, and compare results to theoretical principles.

5. Learn how to work together in a group of peers.

6. Prepare and deliver effective oral presentations that summarize experimental findings and analysis.

7. Prepare written lab reports that clearly communicate experimental results, analysis, and relationship to theory.

8. Learn the ethical responsibilities that come with conducting experiments and communicating data, including accurate reporting and proper attribution.

Prerequisites by Topic

Engineering calculations, differential equations; momentum, heat and mass transfer; reaction engineering; computer literacy and basic skills

Meets for 3 hours of discussion and 8 hours of laboratory each week for 10 weeks.

Need for analyzing experimental results.

Liquid/liquid extraction; Batch distillation; tubular flow reactor; Gas Absorption; Dynamics of stirred tank; Process control
