BME 262 Microimplants (Credit Units: 4) Essential concepts of biomedical implants at the micro scale. Design, fabrication, and applications of several microimplantable devices including cochlear, retinal, neural, and muscular implants. Graduate students only. Concurrent with BME 148. Course Learning Outcomes. Students will:

1. Understand the essentials of applying MEMS technology for implantable devices

2. Understand the state-of-research in cochlear, retinal, neural, and muscle implants

3. Develop the knowledge base and skills in conducting research in MEMS-based implants

4. Present research findings both orally and in written reports

Prerequisites by Topic

MEMS design tools, fabrication, packaging, and testing techniques; common implant materials, biocompatibility, and foreign body responses.

Class Schedule:

Meets for 3 hours of lecture each week for 10 weeks.

Computer Usage:

Students will use word processors and drawing programs to do homework assignments.
