BME 248 Microimplants (Credit Units: 4) Essital concepts of biomedical implants at the micro scale. Design, fabrication, and applications of several microimplantable devices including cochlear, retinal, neural, and muscular implants. Prerequisite: BME111 and EECS179, or consent of instructor. Concurrent with BME 148. (Design units: 1)

Course Learning Outcomes. Students will:

1. Understand the essentials of applying MEMS technology for implantable devices

2. Understand the state-of-research in cochlear, retinal, neural, and muscle implants

3. Develop the knowledge base and skills in conducting research in MEMS-based implants

4. Present research findings both orally and in written reports

Prerequisites by Topic

MEMS design tools, fabrication, packaging, and testing techniques; common implant materials, biocompatibility, and foreign body responses.

Class Schedule:

Meets for 3 hours of lecture and 1 hour of discussion each week for 10 weeks.

Computer Usage:

Students will use word processors and drawing programs to do homework assignments.
